Browse CatalogTat-Beclin-1 is a cell-penetrating peptide designed to induce autophagy. It was developed by Beth Levine's laboratory at UT Southwestern Medical Center and consists of the HIV Tat protein transduction domain fused to a sequence derived from Beclin-1, a key protein in the autophagy initiation complex. The Tat domain enables cell penetration, while the Beclin-1 fragment disrupts the interaction between Beclin-1 and its negative regulator GAPR-1 (also known as GLIPR2).
Research applications of Tat-Beclin-1 center on autophagy induction. Published studies have used it to investigate the role of autophagy in various disease models, including infectious disease (where autophagy can target intracellular pathogens), cancer biology, neurodegeneration, and aging. It provides a peptide-based alternative to genetic manipulation or small molecule autophagy inducers like rapamycin.
