Epithalon, also spelled Epitalon, is a synthetic tetrapeptide (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) originally developed by Professor Vladimir Khavinson at the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology. It was designed as a synthetic analog of the naturally produced peptide epithalamin, which is secreted by the pineal gland.
The primary research interest in Epithalon revolves around its reported ability to activate telomerase, the enzyme responsible for maintaining telomere length. Telomere shortening is associated with cellular aging, and research into compounds that might influence this process has attracted considerable scientific attention. Published studies, primarily from Russian research groups, have reported various effects in cell culture and animal models related to lifespan and aging biomarkers.
